The role of pulmonary rehabilitation in multidisciplinary approaches: a case of disseminated tuberculosis

Abstract

Disseminated tuberculosis (TB) is a mycobacterial infection wherein mycobacteria have spread from the lungs to other parts of the body through the blood or lymph system. It develops in the small number of infected people whose immune systems do not successfully contain the primary infection. The TB extra pulmonary symptoms such as muscle weakness, cachexia and depression may persist for a long time. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) programme possibly a useful intervention in the treatment process both in active and also in sequlae phase. In this case study, we are presenting the report of a young male who diagnosed as disseminated TB. He was admitted to the Medical college and hospital due to worsening hypoxia associated with pneumothorax, and he went on placement of repeated intercostals drains with oxygen support. Following the medical stabilization, he was referred to the unit of pulmonary rehabilitation, where he had positive results and recovered well.
